Everything you want to know about Reiki

What is Reiki?

“Rei” means “universal” or spiritually guided and “Ki” is “life force energy.” Reiki promotes deep relaxation and thus supports the body’s innate healing abilities.

Reiki is utilized by massage therapists, nurses, acupuncturists, counselors, estheticians and yoga teachers. Others learn Reiki to give treatments to their family, friends and pets and to practice self-Reiki.

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction, relaxation and energy balancing. In the practice of Reiki this spiritual energy is utilized for energy balancing via in-person or long-distance treatments.

Reiki has branched off into many directions, but Reiki is Reiki. The branches are of the same tree. The important thing is finding a Reiki Teacher that you feel a connection to and resonate with.

What are the benefits of Reiki?

Reiki is deeply restorative, empowering and balancing. It reduces stress and facilitates healing and personal growth. It has a positive effect – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It is centering and increases intuition.

How is a Reiki treatment given?

In a standard treatment Reiki energy flows from the practitioners hands into the client. The client is usually laying on a massage table but treatments can also be given while the client is seated or even standing. The client remains fully clothed. The practitioner places their hands on or near the client’s body in a series of hand positions. These include positions around the head and shoulders, the stomach, and feet. Other, more specific positions may be used based on the clients needs. Each position is held for three to ten minutes depending on how much Reiki the client needs at each position. The whole treatment usually lasts between 45 and 55 minutes.

How Does Reiki Work?

Reiki is based on the principle that Qi or life energy exists and flows all around us. In our own bodies, it flows through a series of channels known as meridians and is particularly strong in certain acupoints knowns in traditional Chinese medicine as Dantian (or Chakras in common Western Reiki terminology). Qi nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of Qi is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.

Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the Qi and charging them with positive energy. It raises the the energy field in and around the physical body where the Qi disruption. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the Qi pathways, thus allowing Qi to flow in a healthy and natural way.

Are there any side effects from a Reiki treatment?

Most of the time a person will feel relaxed and uplifted by a Reiki treatment. However, sometimes a person will have what is called a healing crisis. As a person’s vibration goes up, toxins that have been stored in the body will be released into the blood stream to be filtered by the liver and kidneys and removed from the system. When this happens, sometimes a person can get a headache or stomach ache or feel weak. If this happens, it is a good idea to drink more water, eat lighter meals and get more rest. The body is cleansing as part of the healing process so this is a good sign.

Does insurance cover Reiki treatments?

Reiki is just starting to be recognized by insurance companies. While not many are covering Reiki treatments, some are. Check with your local insurance company for details.

Is Reiki Right for Me?

As Reiki is gentle and noninvasive, it’s really safe for everyone. People most commonly seek Reiki to help them prepare for or recover from surgery, manage stress and anxiety, cope with the loss of a loved one, or as an adjunct to professional medical care, like cancer treatment. Some people seek Reiki for supportive touch when they feel alone in dealing with troubling situations as well. Reiki may be especially helpful if you haven’t seen results from other treatments or solutions. Reiki may boost the effectiveness of other medical treatments by reducing stress, which can be a roadblock.
